32 Sqn RCT  was still part of the Junior Leaders Regiment but was detached at Driffield in Yorkshire. From here we were sent to the Army School of Mechanical Transport at Leconfield to be taught to drive the basic vehicles of the Army (typically a Land Rover and a 4 Tonne HGV Lorry) and to qualify as Driver Trade B3.

Whilst waiting to be “Picked Up” (Chosen for driver Training) we carried on with military training which included such things as Basic Radio training (which I did 4 times I think!!) Drill, PT etc.

I passed my HGV 3 after 18 hours of training and because I did it so quick!, I was progressed to HGV 2 Training!  I did the training and on my last session my instructor informed me he had submitted me for my test, he asked “ are you going into the Tank Transporter Trade?” No  I replied “I’m going to be a Movement Controller” he looked at me in disgust and promptly cancelled my test and sent me back to Driffield!!

Particular memories at 32 Sqn:

Tp Sgt - Blackie Widows  (Later RSM 7 Tk Tptr Regt RCT)

Discos in the Gym!  (Girls from Bridlington!!)

Being chased by gangs of skinheads in Hull every time we were waiting for the bus when returning from leave.

Whilst I was at Driffield I also attend a B3 All Clerks Course at Blackdown Barracks (Depot for the RAOC at the time!)

When My training was complete I became a TSA (Trained Soldier Available) we had a parade to inform us of where our first posting was to be.  I remember having a giggle when Dave Graham-Battersby (GB) was posted to Depot & Training Regt RCT (Aldershot) the giggle didn’t,t last long as I was posted to the same place!!!
